Day 56 – May 5 – Near Crescent City, CA

We left the Redwood Acres RV Park and headed to Costco for gas.  The camper was running low on fuel and I had hoped to get out of California without buying any more gas, but it was not to be.

We headed north on 101 (also known as the PCH or the Redwood Highway) towards Crescent City for our last stop in California.  Our actual destination was just south of Crescent City at a Passport America campground in Klamath named Chinook RV Resort.  It is off-season right now so the nightly fee is half price at $15.  We plan to stay two nights and then move on to Oregon.  It seems like we have spent a long time in California and we are all ready for a new state.

We stopped at a beach about half way to our campground and took some pictures.  The waves were really crashing in and it was quite a beautiful beach.

This sign was posted at the beach - part of the reason it was empty I guess
We moved on toward the campground and soon came upon a head of Roosevelt Elk.  These elk were named for Theodore Roosevelt and live in rain forests.  The Olympic National Park was created to protect these elk and is home to the largest unmanaged herd of Roosevelt Elk.  The elk were right beside the road in a shallow valley and I almost got off the road while I took a couple of pictures.  A couple of passing cars were not happy with me but I really didn’t care, I wanted the pictures.

We got the campground around 2 and set up camp.  The campground is on the banks of the Klamath River.  The camp host said the salmon were moving up the river and therefore seals were following them and feeding on the salmon.  Sure enough, we saw a couple of seals later in the day.  He also said a female bear and cub have been seen on an island in the river and there is a nesting pair of Bald Eagles across the river.

We decided to do some wash and go sightseeing tomorrow.  While Dorrie waited in the laundry room I went down by the river to watch for eagles.  As I sat there it appeared the river had waves on it, but looking closer I could see fish making the waves as they came to the surface of the water.  You could see hundreds upon hundreds of fish about two feet long in the river.  Once in a while I would see an eagle some were Bald Eagles and others were Osprey I think.  This is really a cool place to camp.
