Day 57 – May 6 - Crescent City, CA

We loafed around until around noon and then loaded up for a drive into Crescent City.  It is an interesting city in northern California that was almost wiped out in the 1964 tsunami from the Alaskan earthquake.  They have rebuilt the city and then it was hit again in either 2011 or 2012 (don’t remember which) and so they now have a tsunami-proof harbor.

We stopped at an overlook of the city and took the pictures below.

Our destination was the Battery Point Lighthouse, built 1856.  The lighthouse survived the 1964 tsunami because of the angle the waves hit the coast near the lighthouse.  The light was manned at the time and the couple could see the waves coming at them, but there was nothing they could do but ride it out.

Rick and I walked out the point and took some pictures.  While he went inside the building I was talking to a lady outside that was a volunteer working there.  She said there are two teams that volunteer; one couple lives in the building and the other couple lives in their RV.  She lived in their RV and said she and her husband are on the list to live in the house sometime in the future.

Back at the camper we watched the birds looking for eagles.  There were lots of birds and sometimes it was hard to decide what we were looking at - crows, seagulls, Osprey and sometimes a Bald Eagle.

Tomorrow we will go into Oregon and move towards Crater Lake National Park.
