Day 119 – July 7 (Alaska Day 28) – Anchorage

We went to the Ulu Knife Factory this morning.  It is an interesting place!

The Ulu is an Alaskan knife with a curved blade so you can cut using a rolling motion.  A young man met us at the door with a short demonstration on how to use the knife.  Dorrie asked if he used one.  He said he used his a couple of weeks ago to skin a grizzly bear he shot with a black power rifle.  We watched them make the cutting board – it has a bowl on one side and flat on the other. Then they cut out the handles and sharpened the blades.  These processes were done performed in the factory and you watch through windows from within the prerequisite gift shop.  Behind the counter inside the gift shop they attach the handles and package up the knives.

We are thinking of entering the Iditarod next year!
We got out of there with a smoking credit card and headed to the Wild Berry Products.

This place features a large gift shop attached to a small candy kitchen.  They have a chocolate “waterfall” 20 feet high, or so they say.  It is really a chocolate cascade if you ask me.  What do you think?

We whipped out the still smoking credit cards for some chocolate and more gifts.  I think I now have two pairs of underwear and one pair of socks.  The rest have been thrown away to make room for gifts.  We are going to have head home soon, or I will just have to have a shirt and jeans painted on me!

While we were on a roll, we stopped at Wild West Guns again.  This time it was open.  Dorrie was wanting to see Phred, but she was not working today.  Hans was not there either.  We did see Ken and a new guy (Danny) that will be in season 3 of the TV show Wild West Alaska.  When we stopped at the Gold and Silver Pawn Shop (Pawn Stars TV show), none of the people from the show were there.  It was nice to see Ken was really working, and sounded just like the show.

Sadie was feeling better today, but I called the vet office anyway.  They would not take us, told me to take her to an animal hospital.  I didn’t want to do that, so we rolled the dice and decided to see how she did the rest of the day.  She has been fine, she now goes down the steps by herself but will not go up them.  No more chills and she has been acting normal.  I think she is on the road to recovery.
