Day 102 – June 20 (Alaska Day 11)– Goodbye Denali National Park

We had a meeting and everyone wanted to leave the park a day early.  The weather wasn’t any better today and the forecast called for showers and thunderstorms in the park.  So at about 11 we packed up and headed out.  Once we were on the paved road we did see one moose but that was all.

Dorrie and I went to some shops just outside the park while Rick and Mary picked up the car.

We stopped at the Alaskan Veteran Memorial and had a fantastic view of Mount McKinley.  Dorrie could not stop taking pictures.  It is very rare to be able to see the mountain and it was a great experience.

We joined up and headed towards Wasilla where Dorrie had a prescription refill waiting.  We found the Walgreens and she got her pills and we were on our way to Eagle River where the gas was cheaper.

We got to the Fred Meyers store in Eagle River and filled up the campers with gas.  We planned to spend the night on the parking lot of the Fred Meyers, so Rick and I went in to make sure it was okay.  Seems the city has an ordinance against overnight stays, so we loaded up and hit the road.

Because of the laws in Anchorage we knew we would have to drive past it to be able to stop for the night.

After trying a couple of places, like a state park, which was full.  About 10 o’clock we pulled into a roadside pullout.  We will spend the night about 30 miles south of Anchorage on the side of the road.
