Day 87 – June 5 –
Whitehorse Yukon
The drive from Teslin Lake to Whitehorse was spent looking
at the many lakes for moose and the roadsides for caribou or bears. All we saw was lakes, trees, and empty
roadsides!
We made it to Whitehorse about noon and checked in at the Hi
Country RV Park for two days. The campsites
are very tight, but we have full hookups for our stay.
We drove into Whitehorse to see some of the sights. We ending up going the wrong direction, but
we did see a grizzly bear on the road – but we didn’t get a photo of it and
when we went back to take a picture, it was gone.
We went to the visitor’s center, it seems all the towns have
one and they are a great resource for local information. When we were in Watson Lake we got a Yukon
Passport book where you get different tourist attractions to stamp the book. After getting 10 stamps you can be entered
into a drawing for an ounce of gold. If
you get 20 stamps then you could win 5 ounces of gold. We visited the Klondike paddle wheeler and
got our books stamped.
We decided to eat at the Klondike Rib and Salmon BBQ. We all had the fish and chips. On the menu it listed one, two, or three
pieces of fish. The waitress said the
pieces were large so we each decided on one piece. It was a good thing! Not only was the piece large, it was very
meaty and very delicious. For dessert we
had bread-pudding that had raisins, apples, and coconut in it and was topped
with a Canadian whiskey caramel sauce and ice cream. Both the fish and pudding were outstanding.
After eating we hit a couple of other places to get our
books stamped. One of our stops was the
Transportation Museum where they have an actual DC-3 airplane that acts as a
wind vane. While we were there the wind
changed and the plane actually moved on it's mount to a new heading – it was
really cool. I think I read that it only
takes a 3 mph wind to move the airplane.
