Day 93 – June 11 –
End of Alaska Highway
I went up for the sourdough pancake breakfast – no one else
wanted to go, so it was just myself. I
had the reindeer sausage and it was good.
The whole breakfast was very good.
We hit the road with our nose towards Fairbanks and our tail
pointed at Tok. We were watching for
wildlife – to no avail.
We stopped at a meat shop that featured local products like
elk, bison, and reindeer. We tried the
samples and most were very good. As we
were leaving a couple from Independence, Missouri pulled in. We had seen them at the pancake throw last
night. We said hello and got back on the
road.
Our next stop was Delta Junction, the official end of the
Alaska Highway. We stopped at the
visitor’s center. It has an end of
highway sign and a couple captured and stuffed unofficial state birds displayed
in the lawn near the sign.
Unofficial state bird |
We had just finished taking pictures when the fellow
Missourians stopped.
The farmers market was open, so we walked over to see what
they had to offer. It was a very small
market and too early for any fresh vegetables except lettuce.
We stopped at a state park that had the Rika Roadhouse
museum. We ate at the café
in the park, took more pictures, toured the roadhouse and hit the road again.
First view of the pipe line |
As we were driving along we saw a moose standing on the
opposite side of the road near the tree line.
I stopped for a picture and it moved into the trees before I could take
the snapshot – but I got to see it before it disappeared.
We are currently stopped in a pullout area for the
night. I was walking the dogs and we
found a dead moose – what is left of it anyway.
I thought it smelled bad; the dogs seemed like the smell.
