Day 91 – June 9 – Diamond Tooth Gerties

We crossed the Yukon again around noon to do some more sightseeing in Dawson City.  Our first stop was the Midnight Dome road for a fantastic view of Dawson City and the Yukon River valley.  The pictures show it best.

The next place was 13 kilometers down a gravel road to Dredge Number 4, a National Historical Monument.

The dredge would work its way up a gold bearing stream, digging out the rocks down to bedrock.  One of the signs said the dredge would move half of a mile in a 8 month season, working 24 hours a day and seven days a week.  It was really very interesting to see the machine and the thing that I found really interesting is a hydroelectric plant powered the dredge from 60 kilometers away.  That is about is about 37 miles.  The power line was placed on floating platforms to get to the dredge.

We went to the visitor’s center to watch a couple of films they had on the early days of Dawson City.  They were very interesting and were made up of actual old photos and movies – nothing modern was included except the voice over of the narrator.

We took the ferry back to the campground and relaxed for a while.  About 7:30 we were back on the ferry to go to the gambling hall – Diamond Tooth Gerties.  They have table games and slot machines.  We tried our luck for maybe 15 minutes and then joined the Ottos at a table to watch the show.  They put on three shows a night and we were told the later the show the more “adult oriented” the material became.  Since we are leaving tomorrow we only stayed for the first show.

Gertie would sing a number followed by four can-can type dancers.

They continued this cycle for about 20 minutes.  Then two of the girls came out to pick a guy each to join them on stage to dance.

I ended up on stage and got to show off the dancing skills my daughters and granddaughters all inherited from me.  It was great fun.

We returned home via the ferry for the last time and settled in for the night.  Tomorrow we leave Canada and re-enter U.S.A.
