Day 105 – June 23
(Alaska Day 14)– Homer
We drove to the end of the road today. We went to Homer where the Sterling Highway
ends at Land's End.
This guy/girl had a nest near Land's End |
Look at the left edge of the nest - it looks like one or two chicks |
The is a strip of narrow land running out into the Cook
Inlet known as the Homer Spit. It has a deep
water port and lots of charter boat businesses.
There are a few gift shops on the Spit and we walked through some of the
shops.
We drove out to a boat launch area that runs off the
Spit. As we were returning to the Spit
we saw an Eagle land in a tree. We
parked almost under the tree and it didn’t bother the guy at all. We took lots of pictures.
We ate lunch at Captains Pattie’s restaurant – Dorrie had
clam chowder and I had halibut. I am not
a chowder fan but Dorrie loved it and my halibut was great.
We went over to the Salty Dog Saloon for a drink – you have
to do that when you are in Homer. This is the original Salty Dog. We
added a dollar bill to the wall – the place is covered in dollars, some so faded I
have to think there are some silver certificates on the walls or on the
ceiling.
On the way in it was raining a little and the clouds were
very low. There was an overlook but you
couldn’t see anything. When we left the
weather was better so we stopped for some pictures.
We were rewarded with not only great views of
Homer but there were 3 or 4 Bald Eagles soaring over the water so we took more
pictures.
Another great day in Alaska!
