Day 97 – June 15
(Alaska Day 6)– Arctic Circle
We got a Face-Time call from Amy and the kids this morning while
we were getting ready to pack up the camper.
It was nice to see and talk to the kids.
She had said that Adam didn’t recognize me with the beard.
After the call we moved the campers from Riverview Campground
to the Wal-Mart lot and loaded up the dogs.
We hit the road before 9 o’clock heading due north. The road ran beside the Alaskan Pipe
Line.
Soon we came to the Dalton Highway
– the same one the ice road truckers drive in the wintertime. We went down “the roller coaster” and “beaver
slide” on our way to the Arctic Circle.
You get a certificate for going over the Arctic Circle and
we thought we would get it there.
Wrong! The visitor’s center was
in Coldfoot. We were low on gas so we
went on another 70 miles to Coldfoot. Between
the actual circle location and Coldfoot we saw a momma moose and baby on the
side of the road.
We got our certificate and gas and headed back. It was about 2:30 in the afternoon at this
point. We had lunch in the car on the
way back.
We were off the Dalton Highway when Mary saw a moose in a
pond through the trees. We stopped for
pictures and then returned to the campers after 11 hours in the car!
