Day 98 – June 16 (Alaska Day 7)– Looking for Wildlife

After spending 11 hours in the car yesterday we took it easy this morning.  Rick washed the car and then Dorrie helped clean out the inside.

About 2 we headed out for lunch/supper at a local restaurant, The Pump House.  The site of the restaurant was once a pump that took water from the Chena River and piped it overland to a gold mine that used a water monitor to remove the ground over the gold bearing gravel.  That type of mining used lots of water, but the water did return to the river.

On the way to the Pump House we stopped at the Post Office to get stamps and mail some post cards.  Dorrie ran in and came right back out – the line was very long and didn’t seem to be moving.  We drove on to the restaurant, only to find it was closed until 3 o’clock – about 40 minutes away.  I was driving and Rick was navigating from the back seat.  He directed me to the downtown Post Office.  Dorrie ran in again and this time got the stamps.

Rick directed me through a series of turns (he was looking for a liquor store for beer).  Soon he had me stop.  He and Dorrie went in and then they came out laughing.  They said why buy beer, lets go to the camper.  We were in the parking lot where the campers were parked!  So we stopped at the campers and then headed back to the Pump House.

We were told it was a must stop.  Well I have had better food, but it was a nice place.

Our plan was to then drive towards Chena Hot Springs to see if we could spot any wildlife in the evening.  Well after driving about 50 miles towards the springs we didn’t see any thing except mosquitos.  We tried a couple of side roads and every time we stopped, the mosquitos would swarm around the car.  It was like the attack of the starved mosquitos.

We returned one last time to the Fairbanks Wal-Mart lot.
