Day 89 – June 7 –
Road towards Dawson City
We planned to get to the RV washing station this morning as
close to opening time as possible, which was 7:30. We were running a little ahead of the Ottos,
so we pulled over to the wash area, but someone had just pulled in ahead of
us. We waited while this guy – who was
in no hurry – worked on his camper.
After waiting about 30 minutes, and he was not close to being finished,
we decided to head out. The campers are
really dirty after all this time on the road and need a good bath, but it is
just going to have to wait until Alaska.
We turned on the Klondike Highway just outside of Whitehorse
and drove towards Dawson City. There
wasn’t much in the way of sights along the road. The most activity was trying to miss the
potholes in the road. The road is not in
real good shape, with bad payment and frost heaves (places where the road has
buckled because of the freezing weather).
We stopped at the Five Fingers rapids to look at the area
that gave many a river traveler problems.
We took some photos and ate lunch.
About two o’clock we reached our stopping place for the
night. This is a former government
campground along the Petty River. It is
still available for camping, but there isn’t any maintenance on the
grounds. Tomorrow we head on into Dawson
City.
